Do Your Seasonal Flu Duty

The seasonal flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and in some instances can even cause death. Most people have some immunity and a vaccine is available.

Every year in the United States, on average:

  • Five percent to 20 percent of the population gets the flu.
  • More than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications.
  • Approximately 36,000 people die from seasonal flu.

Get yourself and your family vaccinated. Flu shots are strongly recommended for everyone, especially for those at high risk:

  • Children ages 6 months to five years.
  • Household contacts and caregivers of infants under six months of age.
  • Women who are pregnant.
  • People over age 50.
  • People with certain chronic medical conditions, their household contacts and caregivers.
